Preparing a phone photo for a personalised gift
A phone photo can make a lovely gift when the file retains enough detail and the crop gives the subject room. Find the original, examine the faces closely, then try the product’s shape. The camera’s advertised megapixels cannot replace these practical checks.

Find the right version
Start with the photographer’s own photo library. A screenshot can lose detail and is limited by what was displayed. If several family copies exist, ask for the original file rather than another screenshot. Keep an untouched copy before editing.
Check sharpness and framing separately
Zoom in on the eyes or main detail first: cropping will not remove motion blur. Then look at the whole composition. For a rigid 6.6 cm square, check that nobody is lost at the sides. For the approximately 10.5 × 14.8 cm A6 magnet, also check orientation.
Try a real composition
Picture three children sitting across a sofa. A square may cut off the outer faces even when the file is sharp. Another photo taken slightly farther back, or a rectangular format, may work better. Avoid making the faces tiny just to retain every piece of background.
Before uploading
Apple sharing options include keeping the current file format. Google Photos distinguishes Original quality from Storage saver. Check the version you actually retrieve; menus and accepted upload formats can change.
- Keep an original and a separate working copy.
- Avoid edits that make skin or edges look artificial.
- Check every edge in the selected product preview.
- Read names and accents again after cropping.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a screenshot?
It may suit a small format, but an original generally gives you more flexibility. Compare detail and the preview instead of assuming every copy is equivalent.
Will a filter fix a blurred photo?
A filter cannot guarantee recovery of missing detail. Choose a sharper exposure first if one is available.
Should I crop permanently before uploading?
Always keep the original. Make a working copy if needed, then check the product preview because its opening may differ from your screen.
